Iwasaki means 'rocky promontory' or 'rock cape' (岩崎) and is a topographic surname for families living on or near a rocky outcropping or cliff. The name became globally famous through the Iwasaki Yataro, founder of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu, who rose from a lower-ranking samurai in Tosa Domain (Kochi) to become one of the most powerful industrialists of the Meiji era. The surname is most concentrated in Kyushu and Shikoku.
