From the Finnish noun 'laine', meaning 'wave' or 'billow', referring to the motion of water on lakes or the sea. Unlike most high-frequency Finnish surnames, Laine lacks the '-nen' or '-lä' suffix, making it a bare landscape word adopted directly as a family name. This shorter, suffixless form became common particularly in coastal and lakeside areas of western Finland, especially in Ostrobothnia and the Turku region.
