Jokinen
Herkunft & Geschichte
From 'joki', the Finnish word for 'river', combined with the suffix '-nen'. Rivers were the primary arteries of travel, trade, and settlement in pre-modern Finland, and naming families after the river near which they lived was natural and widespread. Finland has over 25,000 rivers and streams, and 'joki' is one of the most common elements in Finnish geographical names — appearing in Rovaniemi (on the Kemijoki), Jyväskylä (on the Jyväsjoki), and hundreds of other place names. Jokinen is broadly distributed across Finland with slight concentration in the central and northern lake and river regions.
