Herkunft & Geschichte

Means 'person from Karelia' (Finnish: Karjala), the ancient eastern region of Finland that stretches from the Finnish Lakeland into what is now northwestern Russia. Karelia is one of the most culturally significant regions in Finnish history: it was the homeland of the oral epic poetry collected by Elias Lönnrot as the Kalevala, the source of the karelianist artistic movement, and the subject of devastating loss when Finland ceded most of Finnish Karelia to the Soviet Union after the Winter War. The name thus carries strong connotations of regional identity, cultural pride, and historical memory for Finnish speakers.
