Kinnunen
Herkunft & Geschichte
Derives from 'kinnu' or 'kinnas', an archaic Finnish dialectal word related to a type of mitten or glove, or alternatively from 'kinneri', a word for a small ridge or elevated strip of land. The precise etymology remains debated among Finnish onomasticians, but the '-nen' suffix is characteristic of the Savonian dialect area where the name originated and is most common. Kinnunen is a strongly regional name: it is overwhelmingly concentrated in North Savo (Pohjois-Savo), particularly around Kuopio, making it a reliable marker of Savonian heritage. The name's geographic concentration is one of the sharpest of any major Finnish surname.
