Nakagawa means 'middle river' (中川) and is a topographic surname for families living along the central course of a river or between two rivers. The name arose naturally in many river-valley communities across Japan. The Nakagawa clan produced samurai retainers in various provinces, and one famous branch served as daimyo of Oka Domain in Bungo Province (Oita) during the Edo period. The name is widespread nationally.
