Morrison
Origine et histoire
Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Morris' or 'son of Maurice', from the Latin 'Mauritius', derived from 'Maurus' meaning 'Moorish' or 'dark-complexioned'. In the Hebrides, Morrison (Scots Gaelic 'Mac Gille Mhoire', 'son of the servant of Mary') was a distinct Gaelic clan name on the Isle of Lewis, associated with the hereditary brieves (judges) of Lewis under the Lords of the Isles. The two strands — Lowland patronymic and Gaelic clan name — merged orthographically and the surname is now common across both Highland and Lowland Scotland.
