Nakashima (also read Nakajima) means 'middle island' (中島) and refers to an island in the middle of a river, lake, or bay — a distinctive and memorable topographic feature. Multiple independent Nakashima/Nakajima clans arose across Japan wherever such islands existed. The name is widespread nationally but concentrated in Kyushu, Yamaguchi, and Ehime prefectures. Both readings (Nakashima and Nakajima) are common.
