Miura means 'three bays' (三浦) and originates from the Miura Peninsula in present-day Kanagawa Prefecture, which has three notable inlets. The Miura clan was a powerful warrior family of the Kamakura period who dominated the peninsula and served as important retainers to the Minamoto shogunate. After their destruction by the Hojo regents in 1247, the Miura name continued through cadet branches across eastern Japan.
