Phan corresponds to the Chinese character 潘 (Pān), which derives from an ancient Zhou-dynasty fief name. It entered Vietnam during the long period of Chinese administration (111 BC–939 AD) and expanded through subsequent Han migration. The name is found throughout Vietnam and is particularly common in central regions around Huế and Quảng Nam.
