Byrne
Asal-usul & Sejarah
Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'O Broin', meaning 'descendant of Bran', where 'Bran' means 'raven' in Irish — a name with strong mythological associations in Celtic tradition, where the raven symbolised war, prophecy, and otherworldly power. The O'Byrnes were a powerful sept of the Ui Dunlainge, once kings of Leinster, who were driven into the Wicklow Mountains by the Anglo-Norman invasion and became among the most tenacious resisters of English rule for centuries. The surname is correspondingly most concentrated in County Wicklow and south County Dublin.
