Kuṇḍalī

कुंडली

The Vedic birth chart or horoscope, a detailed astrological diagram mapping celestial body positions at the exact time and place of birth, used to determine auspicious names.

A kuṇḍalī is the foundational document of Vedic astrology (Jyotiṣa Śāstra). It is a diagrammatic representation of the twelve bhāvas (houses) showing the positions of the navagraha (nine celestial bodies) at the precise moment and geographical location of a person's birth.

Role in Naming

The kuṇḍalī is the primary reference document for the Nāmakaraṇa ceremony. The astrologer examines the Moon's position to determine the janma nakṣatra and janma rāśi, which yield the recommended naming syllables. Beyond the initial syllable, the overall strength of the chart may influence the type of name chosen — a child with a strong Mars placement might receive a name connoting valor.

Lifetime Applications

While the kuṇḍalī's role in naming is its first application, the chart serves as a lifelong reference document. It is consulted for education choices, career guidance, marriage compatibility (through kuṇḍalī milāna), and the timing of major life events. Computerized kuṇḍalī generation has made the practice more accessible — numerous websites and mobile applications can generate a complete birth chart within seconds.
