Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Axel', the Scandinavian form of the Hebrew name Absalom — from 'Avshalom', meaning 'my father is peace'. Axel entered Sweden during the medieval period through German and Danish influence and became closely associated with the Swedish aristocracy; the powerful Bielke and Oxenstierna families, who included members named Axel, made the name prestigious. Lord High Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna (1583–1654), who governed Sweden during Queen Christina's minority, is the most historically significant bearer.
