由来と歴史

Topographic farm name derived from Old Norse 'dalr' meaning 'valley', the Scandinavian cognate of the English 'dale'. Farms named Dahl were situated in valleys or lower-lying land between hills, a landscape feature common throughout Norway's fjord country and inland mountain regions. The name is found across all of Scandinavia — as Dal in Swedish and Dal or Dahl in Danish — but in Norway it is most concentrated in the Telemark, Agder, and Vestfold regions of southern Norway. The short, distinctive spelling makes it one of the most recognisable Norwegian surnames internationally.
