Topographic or locational surname derived from 'John's tun' — Old English 'tun' meaning settlement or estate — referring to an estate belonging to someone named John. The Scottish form 'Johnston' (without a final 'e') is distinct from the Irish and English 'Johnston/Johnstone', though both forms coexist in Scotland. Clan Johnston(e) dominated the Western Marches as one of the great Border clans, centred in Annandale in Dumfriesshire, and their long feud with the Maxwells was one of the bloodiest in Border history. The surname is concentrated in south-west Scotland and the Borders.
