Built from the same root 'mäki' (hill) as Mäkinen, but with the suffix '-lä' instead of '-nen'. The '-lä' ending denotes a place or farmstead associated with the base word, meaning 'the hill farm' or 'the place on the hill'. This suffix type produces settlement or farm names, while the '-nen' type produces personal or family diminutives — both patterns are ancient in Finnish nomenclature. Mäkelä tends to be concentrated in western and southwestern Finland, complementing the more easterly distribution of Mäkinen, suggesting a historical geographic divide in the adoption of each form.
