Derived from the region of Moray (Old Gaelic 'Moireabh', meaning 'sea settlement' or 'seaboard settlement') in north-east Scotland. The name was adopted as a surname by Norman families who settled the region after the twelfth century, notably the de Moravia family who became major Scottish magnates. The clan Murray, centred in Perthshire, produced one of Scotland's greatest military commanders in Lord George Murray, lieutenant-general of the Jacobite army in 1745. Murray is now widespread across Scotland and the Scottish diaspora worldwide.
