Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'O Raghallaigh', meaning 'descendant of Raghallach', where 'Raghallach' is of uncertain ultimate etymology, possibly derived from a personal name relating to 'valour' or 'sociability'. The O'Reillys were among the most powerful Gaelic lords of Ulster, ruling the kingdom of East Breifne in what is now County Cavan for centuries. Known as great patrons of the arts and learning, they maintained one of the last Gaelic courts in Ireland before the final collapse of the Gaelic order in the seventeenth century.
