Ethnic surname derived from Old English 'Scottas', originally denoting a Gaelic speaker from Ireland or (later) Scotland — the Scots were originally a Gaelic-speaking people who migrated from Ireland to western Scotland in the sixth century. As a surname it was applied to Gaelic-speaking incomers to the Anglo-Saxon and later Northumbrian Borders, where it became the clan name of the powerful Border Scots of Teviotdale and Buccleuch. Clan Scott dominated the eastern Scottish Borders for centuries, explaining the surname's high density in Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire.
