Occupational surname derived from Old English 'stigweard' — 'stig' (house, hall) + 'weard' (guardian, keeper) — denoting a steward or estate manager. The Scots form 'Stewart' (later anglicised to 'Stuart' by the French-influenced royal house) derives from Walter fitz Alan, the first hereditary High Steward of Scotland in the twelfth century, whose descendants became the royal House of Stewart.
