Yoshida means 'lucky rice field' (吉田) and originated as a topographic surname for families farming auspiciously yielding land. The name has ancient priestly associations: the Yoshida clan served as hereditary Shinto priests at Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto, developing Yoshida Shinto during the medieval period.
