Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Anders', the Swedish form of Andrew — itself derived from the Greek 'Andreas', from 'aner' (man, male). The suffix '-son' was used in the Scandinavian patronymic tradition to denote descent from the father, and Anders was one of the most popular given names in Sweden throughout the early modern period.
