Mai corresponds to 梅 (Méi), the plum blossom, a powerful symbol of endurance and purity in Sino-Vietnamese culture because it blooms in winter cold. The surname is found across Vietnam and is associated with the Mai Dynasty (Nhà Mai, 722–723 AD), a short-lived Vietnamese uprising against Tang Chinese rule led by Mai Thúc Loan. The plum blossom (hoa mai) is also Vietnam's national flower symbol in the south, deeply embedded in cultural identity.
