Matsuda means 'pine tree rice field' (松田) and is a topographic surname for families whose paddy land featured a prominent pine tree, an iconic symbol in Japanese landscape aesthetics. The Matsuda clan produced samurai retainers in Sagami, Totomi, and western Japan. The name is most common in Kanagawa, Shizuoka, and Okayama prefectures. Matsuda is also the family name behind the Mazda automotive brand (松田 → Matsuda → Mazda).
