Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Lars', the Swedish form of Laurence — from the Latin 'Laurentius', derived from 'laurus' (laurel), the tree associated with victory and honour in antiquity. Lars was among the most common male given names in Sweden throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially in the regions of Vasternorrland and Dalarna, where Larsson remains disproportionately concentrated. The surname was widely spread through the Swedish-American emigrant community of the nineteenth century.
