Lehtinen
Происхождение и история
Like Lehtonen, built from 'lehto' (birch grove or leafy grove) with the suffix '-nen'. The distinction between '-nen' and '-nen' variants of the same root often reflects regional dialect differences rather than meaningful semantic distinction: both names mean essentially 'one from the grove' or 'grove dweller'. Lehtinen is slightly more common in western Finland, while Lehtonen tends to appear in central and eastern regions, illustrating how the same landscape feature generated variant surnames across dialect boundaries. Both names are reminders that the majority of Finns lived in forest clearings and woodland farms.
