Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Rasmus', the Scandinavian contraction of Erasmus, from the Greek Erasmos, meaning 'beloved' or 'desired', derived from 'eran' (to love). The Dutch humanist scholar Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536) popularised this name across northern Europe during the Renaissance, and the Danish form Rasmus became a common given name in the 16th and 17th centuries.
