Watson
Происхождение и история
Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Wat', where 'Wat' is a medieval pet form of Walter — from Old High German 'Waldhar', composed of 'wald' (rule) and 'heri' (army), meaning 'ruler of the army'. The '-son' suffix follows the Scandinavian patronymic convention widespread in Lowland Scotland. Watson is most concentrated in the Scottish Lowlands and north-east, especially Aberdeenshire and Angus, and has spread globally through the Scottish diaspora. The name is inseparable culturally from Dr John H. Watson, Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional companion to Sherlock Holmes — Doyle himself was of Irish-Scottish heritage.
