The Yu (于) surname descends from Yu Shu, a son of King Wu of Zhou who was enfeoffed in the Yu region of present-day Shandong province. The character 于 functions as a preposition meaning 'at' or 'in' but also serves as a surname. This Yu is distinct from 余 (rank 40). The clan is mainly concentrated in Shandong, Henan, and Hebei provinces.
