Origin & History

The Guo surname derives from the ancient state of Guo, a Zhou Dynasty principality in present-day Henan and Shaanxi provinces. The clan descends from two uncles of King Wen of Zhou: Guo Shu and Guo Zhong. The character 郭 originally referred to the outer wall of a city or fortification. When the state of Guo was absorbed by Jin in 655 BC, its people adopted Guo as their family name.
