Origin & History
The Hu surname originates from the ancient state of Hu, established by a prince of the Zhou Dynasty royal family in Anhui province. The character 胡 was also used historically to refer to non-Han peoples from the north and west, and some Hu families descend from assimilated Xiongnu or Xianbei nobility. The clan is widespread across central and eastern China.
