Origin & History

Reddy derives from the Telugu 'reddi', a title of uncertain origin possibly related to the Sanskrit 'rashtrakuta' (local chieftain). It is the dominant forward-caste surname of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where Reddys historically served as landowners, military commanders, and local rulers. The Reddy kingdom ruled Kondavidu and Rajamahendravaram in the 14th–15th centuries. The community has strong representation in politics, agriculture, and academia in South India.
