Origin & History
Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'O Riain', meaning 'descendant of Rian', where 'Rian' is thought to derive from the Old Irish 'ri' (king) combined with a diminutive suffix — giving the sense of 'little king' or 'kingly one'. Alternatively, some scholars derive it from an older Celtic root related to 'water' or 'sea'. The principal Ryan sept was based in County Tipperary, where they were lords of Owney and Arra, a territory straddling modern Tipperary and Limerick. Ryan is among the most widely dispersed Irish surnames in the global diaspora.
