Origin & History

Watanabe derives from Watanabe no Tsu, a historical ferry landing on the Yodo River in modern Osaka. The Watanabe clan, descended from the Saga Genji line of the imperial family, became powerful warriors who controlled this strategic crossing point. The legendary warrior Watanabe no Tsuna, one of the four heavenly kings of Minamoto no Yorimitsu, helped spread the name's prestige throughout medieval Japan.
