Origin & History

The Xiao surname originates from the ancient state of Xiao, a principality in present-day Anhui province during the Spring and Autumn period. The character 蕭 originally referred to a fragrant herb used in rituals. The Xiao clan became the imperial family of the Southern Qi and Southern Liang dynasties (479–557 AD), giving the surname exceptional historical prestige. Simplified to 萧 in modern mainland China.
