Origin & History

The Yuan surname traces its origins to Yuan Tao, a descendant of Emperor Shun who was enfeoffed in the Yuan region in Henan province during the Zhou Dynasty. The character 袁 depicts the garments of a nobleman. The clan rose to great prominence during the Eastern Han Dynasty, particularly the Runan Yuan family, which produced four generations of three-duke ministers.
