Built from 'heinä', the Finnish word for 'hay' or 'grass', and the suffix '-nen'. The name originally designated someone who lived near a hay meadow or was involved in hay harvesting, a critical activity in Finland's agricultural economy for feeding livestock through the long winter months. Hay meadows ('niitty') were carefully managed landscape features in traditional Finnish farming, and naming families after them was natural and practical.
