Sakamoto

由来と歴史

Sakamoto means 'base of the slope' (坂本) and is a topographic surname for families living at the foot of a hillside or slope. The town of Sakamoto at the foot of Mt. Hiei near Kyoto was a major religious and commercial center controlled by Enryakuji Temple. The name is associated with Sakamoto Ryoma, the iconic Tosa samurai whose vision helped forge the Meiji Restoration. It is most prevalent in western Japan and Kyushu.
