Harada means 'field rice field' or 'plain paddy' (原田) combining hara (原, open field or plain) with da (田, rice field), referring to paddies on an open plain rather than terraced hillsides. The name arose as a topographic surname during the Nara and Heian periods. Several samurai Harada clans appeared across Japan, and the name is most common in Kyushu (especially Fukuoka and Saga) and western Japan.
