Japanese Names

日本の名前

Japanese names are distinguished by their extraordinary diversity and the creative freedom afforded to parents in character selection. A Japanese name consists of a family name (myoji, 苗字) followed by a given name (namae, 名前) in the traditional order, though Western order (given name first) is commonly used in international contexts. In 2020, the Japanese government officially reinstated the traditional family-first order for romanized names in government documents. Japan has a staggering number of surnames—estimated at over 100,000 unique family names, far more than any other East Asian country. Common surnames like Sato (佐藤), Suzuki (鈴木), and Takahashi (高橋) are shared by millions, while rare surnames may belong to a single family. Many Japanese surnames are topographical, derived from landscape features: Yamamoto (山本, base of the mountain), Tanaka (田中, in the rice field), and Kawaguchi (川口, mouth of the river) reflect the agrarian origins of the naming system. Given names are where Japanese naming truly becomes an art form. Parents select kanji characters not only for meaning but for their aesthetic appearance and the desired reading (yomi, 読み). A single kanji can have multiple readings—both on'yomi (Sino-Japanese, derived from Chinese pronunciation) and kun'yomi (native Japanese reading)—and parents are free to assign unconventional readings to characters, a practice known as kirakira names (キラキラネーム, glittering names). This freedom means that a Japanese name often cannot be read correctly without asking its bearer. The Ministry of Justice maintains the jinmeiyou kanji (人名用漢字) list, which together with the jouyou kanji (常用漢字) specifies approximately 2,999 kanji permitted for use in personal names. This list is periodically updated—most recently expanded in 2004 and 2015—to accommodate parental demand for specific characters.
