由来と歴史

Formed from 'koski', the Finnish word for 'rapids' or 'waterfall', and the diminutive suffix '-nen'. Rapids were among the most prominent landmarks in the Finnish landscape, serving as sites for water mills, fishing stations, and river crossings, and thus naturally gave rise to place names and family names across the country. The word 'koski' appears in dozens of Finnish town and village names, from Kuusankoski to Valkeakoski, underscoring its centrality to Finnish settlement geography. Koskinen is distributed throughout Finland but is particularly common in inland regions where rivers and rapids shaped both the landscape and the livelihoods of communities.
