Nature surname meaning 'linden branch' or 'linden grove', composed of the Swedish 'lind' (linden tree) and 'gren' (branch). Like the related Lindqvist and Lindberg, Lindgren is one of the many 'lind-' compound nature surnames that proliferated in Sweden from the seventeenth century onward. The 'gren' element (branch) is a slightly less common suffix in Swedish surnames than 'berg' (hill) or 'strom' (stream), giving Lindgren a distinctive character within the linden-name family.
