Occupational surname from Scots and northern English 'miln' or 'milne', a variant of 'mill' — denoting someone who worked at or lived near a mill. The Scots form 'Milne' preserves the older spelling of the word and is distinctively concentrated in north-east Scotland, particularly Aberdeenshire, where it is far more common than in any other region.
