Moen
Origin & History
Topographic farm name derived from Old Norse 'mori' or Norwegian 'mo' meaning 'sandy plain', 'moorland', or 'heath' — an area of flat, sandy, or gravelly ground, typically open and sparsely vegetated. Farms named Moen were situated on such open plains or sandy heathlands, a landscape type found particularly in the eastern Norwegian counties of Innlandet and Viken where glacially deposited sandy soils created characteristic 'mo' terrain. The name Moen is distinctively Norwegian and less common in the other Scandinavian countries, giving it a particularly national character.
