Origin & History
Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Ole', the Norwegian form of Olaf, itself from Old Norse 'Oleifr' or 'Anleifr', composed of the elements 'anu' (ancestor) and 'leifr' (heir, descendant) — thus 'heir of the ancestors'. Olaf was one of the most venerated names in Norway, borne by two Norwegian kings including Saint Olaf (Olaf II, 995-1030), whose canonisation made the name enormously popular throughout Scandinavia and the Norwegian diaspora. Olsen is among the most instantly recognisable Norwegian surnames internationally.
