Pedersen
Origin & History
Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Peder', the Norwegian and Danish form of Peter, from the Greek 'Petros' meaning 'rock' or 'stone', which itself translates the Aramaic 'Kephas' given by Jesus to Simon Peter in the Gospels. The apostle Peter's enormous prominence in Christian tradition made his name — and its Scandinavian form Peder — one of the most common given names in Norway throughout the medieval and Reformation periods. Pedersen is thus one of the most widespread patronymic surnames in Norway, Denmark, and among Norwegian emigrants to North America.
