A regional surname meaning 'person from Häme' (historically known in Swedish as Tavastland), one of Finland's oldest and most historically significant provinces in the southwestern interior. The Häme region gave its name to the Tavastians, one of the principal Finnish-speaking peoples of the medieval period, who played a central role in the formation of the Finnish nation. Surnames of this type — ending in '-lainen' or '-läinen', meaning 'person from' — form a distinct class of regional identity names that are uniquely Finnish.
