Pandey derives from the Sanskrit 'paṇḍita', meaning 'learned man' or 'scholar'. It is a Brahmin surname widespread in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Pandeys were traditionally Sanskrit-educated priests and scholars who served as advisors to Rajput and other royal courts.
